Heya, bought it as a thank you for all the reactions; I was sleeping during the watch party since I'm from Spain lol. Just as a small extra "clue": Chase said the entire episode is built around a famous 2001: A space oddyssey scene, where there's a sequence of frames that is basically this: close up shot of the face of the protagonist, cutting to what he sees, then him entering the space he just saw. The entire finale follows that pattern with Tony, and as you approach the ending the space between the closeup shot and the shot of him inside of what he sees gets shorter and shorter. It was his way of conveying how we create our own predicament. At the end, you see his face one last time, and then you see black, because you're seeing his death. Don't get me wrong, by cutting to black, he's creating the space for multiple interpretations, to the point you could argue that a physical death is not necessary because Tony is already psychologically dead. There are also clues that further the idea that he dies there (Meadow, his "guardian angel" according to the spoken word segment of the opening of season 6, arrives too late, and she can't physically block the direction from which the shooter comes, etc.). Ultimately, in an interview for a book, Chase said he originally had an idea for a finale that involved Tony going to a meeting where you could tell he was going to die, and not showing it. And then, he moved away from that. I still think the finale is centered around a death scene, but I do think that by cutting to black, he's simultaneously showing you his death through his eyes, and yet the complete opposite: nothing really happened. I wonder if the cat was, in that sense, a visual reference to Schrodinger's cat.
