Svetlana and Furio are both intended to represent the "strong, silent type", which is why they're so heavily juxtaposed with Tony throughout the episode, which also ties into what Svetlana said about Americans in their present state, which Tony obviously represents. It's pretty clear from the therapy scene that he'd like to both be a better person, as well as that strong, silent type, but is unwilling to make the necessary changes in his life. Definitely an interesting look at the US from an outsider's perspective here, with both the Svetlana/Tony scene, as well as Furio's thoughts upon returning to the States.
