2024-07-05 01:05:10 +0000 UTCKaala is not a 'Superstar' film and despite it's cinematic brilliance, it was pulled down due to scenes that setup a strong conflict that needs a Superstar payoff but doesn't which becomes a letdown in the mind of fans. It would have been celebrated as deserved if done by anyone but a mass star. I think today's VJ Sethupathi would have nailed it.

2024-07-04 21:03:31 +0000 UTCKaala is a misunderstood(also flawed) masterpiece which continues to age better year after year. Its a rare movie where a superstar lets the story(and its politics and ideas) take over and Pa Ranjith did a great job building a world of the movie and crafting such a strong supporting cast. Its not perfect and many many people disliked it while the movie also underperforming at the box office, but its a rare mass movie that is so effectively communicating its rage and championing for the oppressed, by giving them a strong voice. By far the best Rajini movie of last decade. One of the most politically charged and anti-caste/anti-establishment mass movie and its a breath of fresh air. It also has a very different, nuanced take on Ramayana which only someone as politically brave like Pa Ranjith would dare pull off. Wish Kaala had done well. Rajini's filmography in last 6-7 years would have looked totally different.
