Chhaya Kadam has become my favorite. Loved her character in LL and can't wait to watch "All we imagine as Light"

The cast IS the crowning jewel of this movie..
Sparsh who plays Deepak - I remember seeing him in a Dance reality show when he was 9-10.. what a wonderful journey..
This is the year of Chhaya Kadam -
(Manju Mai)
LL, Madgaon Express and 2 movies with one winning at Cannes
Saw every interview that was out there of hers..
People who are interested, do watch her interview with Sucharita at Cannes and Sneha Desai on Film Companion.. This lady is full of life..

Oh.. Love Ravi Kishan. Heart touching movie with out of the world casting; couple of places felt the emotions are forced.. Has become his fan after watching "Race Gurram". Ravi Kishan, Brahmanandam, Shaam and Allu Arjun made it an epic..

I agree! I thoroughly enjoyed most parts of RRKPK, especially the humor, the love story, the music/songs & the way Ranveer's character was written and his performance but the whole messaging angle was so off-putting with Alia's character as the savior who reforms Ranveer's family and fully empowers his mother/sister with "just a couple of dialogues" 🤣
Alia's interview scene with the politician & the bra scene with Ranveer are just a couple of examples where I felt like they were trying too hard to forcibly include feminist views with such in-your-face dialogues that they felt like a public service social messaging ad 🤦
The only part of the messaging that not only just worked for me but I absolutely loved was the Dola Re dance sequence and Ranveer's emotional scene that precedes it with Alia's family.

Is it uploaded in Patreon itself? In the app also it is seamless, so think might be inside Patreon itself.
It might be patreon only, that might be why it can’t be shared. But will probably be good for getting around copyright claims as it will be under a login unlike vimeo.

PHOOL (flower)
PUSHPA (flower)
Deepak's village: SOORAJMUKHI (A flower)
The bus Deepak takes to his village: PUSHPA TRAVELS (Flower)
Flower: A symbol of tenderness, innocence or purity. This symbol of innocence and purity is spread throughout the village life in the film.
Phool's husband: DEEPAK (lamp/ a source of light)
Pushpa's husband: PRADEEP (lamp/ a source of light)
A lamp can either guide you through darkness or it can burn you.
Deepak is a guiding force, a ray of hope for both Phool and Pushpa in their darkest times. While Pradeep burnt his ex-wife to death.
(One lamp showed the way, the other burnt down a life)
Pushpa's real name: JAYA (victorious)
Jaya is a rebel at heart. But, because of the social and gender expectations, she is forced to be soft, and tender like a flower ( PUSHPA). Jaya especially mentions the dish made of lotus stems. She consumes a dish made of flowers ( Kamal Kakdi). She symbolically consumes her tenderness her softness, and the flowery side of her character. She rebels against the social norms and expectations such as taking her husband's name and running away from her marriage to pursue her education. She strives to be VICTORIOUS.
Name of the police officer: SHYAM MANOHAR
SHYAM: Dark, Black ( one name of Lord Krishna)
MANOHAR: Lovable, one who wins our heart (another name of Lord Krishna)
In the first part of the movie Shyam Manohar is shown as corrupt, and a greedy officer. Showing the dark side of his character. Thus, he is SHYAM.
In the second half, Shyam Manohar wins our hearts by taking the right step by saving Jaya from her husband. Thus, he becomes MANOHAR.
This shows the dual nature of power and judiciary. It can be dark and mischievous but it can also be very beautiful.

Glad you brought up Rocky aur Rani.. even i thought of that movie when i watched Lapataa Ladies.. while a completely different genre and take, I agree that I found Alia's character nosey and interfering .. the whole Alia portion felt straight out of an Ekta kapoor serial..

Ahahaha Korbin's eyes when Steph asked in the beginning if he went with the wrong lady 😂
Also, the song the band was playing was from Dil To Pagal Hai - "Le Gayi", the one with Karisma Kapoor (Shahid Kapoor was one of the background dancers).

Korbin - this is a slightly off topic (technical) comment - looks like you've uploaded this watchalong to a new source (unlike 'Vimeo' where you mostly upload the uncut ones to). This new one is great as it lets us watch for a certain amount, close the browser and it starts from the previously stopped time on the video and thats very helpful (Vimeo does not allow us to start from where we left off, if we refresh page or close browser). Just a feedback if you can possibly upload future watchalongs with this feature. 😊

A few such examples in Laapataa Ladies:
1. The muslim shopkeeper saying to Deepak that covering one's face is to conceal their identity.
2. Jaya asking the sister-in-law why she won't take her husband's name when it's pretty clear that Jaya should already be aware of this practice given her similar upbringing and when in all likelihood, she would've seen her mother follow the same thing too since her childhood.
3. The lotus stem scene - If Deepak's mother stopped making the dish because the men in the house don't like it, why did she make it now? It felt like the scene was put in there solely so that we can have the dialogue about how women forget their likes/dislikes over a period of time serving others. They could've maybe added a scene before that where Jaya buys lotus stem from the market and that's why the dish is made.
The fact that the idea for the missing poster has to come from Jaya (using a sketch of Phool) also seemed like something done for the convenience of the story & the climax set-up when everyone knows that Deepak's friend runs a printing press and you would expect any one of them to suggest that including the friend himself (without the picture of course but a simple missing poster with the name/details would've also done the work).

The movie wasn't boring at all even on my 3rd watch! The fact that none of the characters have a 180 degree change but just small believable attitude shifts by the end was a very nice touch.
The only gripes I have with this movie are that a few dialogues were too on-the-nose or preachy (which the director also acknowledged in an interview) and felt forced-fit for the makers to convey their messaging through one-liners but it didn't seem realistic/natural for that character in that world to say that line.
They didn't take me out of the movie though which is a testament to the strong emotional connect that the director was able to achieve with the characters unlike in RRKPK, a movie I really enjoyed but didn't like the preachiness of the messaging at all and the way the characters are suddenly empowered fully/have a complete change of heart.

You should watch Koran Rao’s first movie she directed 13 years ago called Dhobi Ghat. It was nominated for Bafta and did many festival rounds. It’s a proper arthouse cinema. Great watch. Kiran has been 1st AD in many Amir Khan productions including Lagaan. She is also his ex wife.

Watch Shahid & Kriti's new romcom "TERI BAATON MAIN AISA ULJHA JIYA" with Steph 💕 Hope you consider watching modern romcom/dramas as well, I feel like it's a neglected watchalong genre on the channel. Also watch Alia & Varun's Dulhania franchise. "HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA" and "BADRINATH KI DULHANIA" ❤️ They are super cute & fun ✨

Fun fact:
I saw this film with the cast in the premiere (happened in my city bhopal since it was shot in MP) and loved it. The star cast were bawling since it was the first time they watched it too but that day I remember it was ravi kishan who was the highlight (policeman in the film) . Every single person applauded and gave him a standing ovation when he was called and he said and i clearly remember if audience will watch these kind of films in theatre then you’ll give standing ovation to i don’t even know how many actors because they appear in every single film but you dont even know them . Amir then hugged him❤️
Best moment that day✨
