2024-09-19 15:25:48 +0000 UTCMani Rathnam has this 'unintended' love trilogy in his filmography: Mouna Ragam, Alaipayuthey, OK Kanmani. Each of them talk about things that were stigmatized in Tamil Nadu (even across India) during the time they were released. Mouna Ragam is about moving on after being forced to break a relationship, Alaipayuthey is about eloping and starting a life without support, OK Kanmani, as you saw showed a little of live-in relationships. One of the reasons why I love his craft and rate him so highly is how he writes his characters and the relationships between them. Highly recommend those two if you are looking for romdrom movies of Mani. One is scored by ARR (Alaipayuthey is one of his best works) and the other by Illayaraja (again an amazing album).

Also my ever favorite would be the modern love chennai Bharathiraja episode which was his tribute to Balu Mahendra with Ilayaraja music!

2024-09-08 15:12:51 +0000 UTC@Sibi: Mani Ratnam has mentioned in a video interview that during the time of Thalapathy, ARR had found an opportunity to interact with him and had invited him to his studio in Chennai and Mani went to his studio and was blown away by the sounds that were showcased to him during that session. That was the moment where Mani wanted to give ARR the opportunity for Roja and he brought KB onboard and made KB experience the same music that he heard in that studio! And KB had a feud at that time with Raja (as you mention) and he was only very happy to introduce ARR! I will need to search for that interview but this is true!

Apparently Mani walks into ARR's studio, hears the song playing and is really struck by it. He asks ARR about it and learns that it is a devotional song sung by ARR's son. Mani says he wants to use the song in the film. ARR wonders how it fits in the movie and Mani says "don't worry about that I'll find a way to use it". ARR asks his wife's permission who says she is happy to have his son launched by Mani as well :)

It might be on a similar bucket as this one. In fact Mani Ratnam is also know to have a romance trilogy with this being the final one. (Mouna Ragam and Alai Payuthey)

2024-09-08 00:26:48 +0000 UTCIf you’re asking why Ar Rahman always works with mani ratnam when he asks it’s because Mani ratnam was the reason Ar Rahman was able to establish himself as a successful music director in Tamil cinema and later on Hindi too. Mani ratnam believed in Ar Rahman and chose him to do the music in Roja, despite being a newbie in 1992. And obviously we are all very lucky that happened otherwise we wouldn’t have ar Rahman 🥰
