There was a reason why Priyanka Chopra was cast. The story of Mary Kom or even Mary Kom as an athlete was not known well then - namely in other regions of India. Unfortunately to get people interested and come watch it on the screen it needed a well known actor. Amongst the popular actors/actresses at the time Priyanka Chopra was most suitable. Mary Kom herself wanted PC to play the role too describing Chopra as the best actress to play the role, adding that her body was well structured, like that of a boxer.
