The partition of India was politically motivated, backed by very strong religious sentiments. When in school, we were fed the story (in India) that it was Mohammed Ali Jinnah who led the argument that the muslims wanted an Islamic state. The voices asking for it (on both sides)grew louder and louder to reach a situation where Gandhi ji could not ignore it anymore. Now - am not so sure if its the only or right way to look at the history. Nothing in Indian history can be explained simply.
The British would have gone along with the decision, as politically it made sense for them. They were going to leave anyway. WWII had weakened the empire and they could not sustain rule over South East Asia. They knew that they can play one entity against the other and it will mean more members of the CommonWealth.
Then, there was a majority of muslims living in the far western and far eastern side of India so it's rather mind boggling that the original Pakistan was on either side of India. East Pakistan eventually became Bangladesh. The war, with India supporting the east, might have been the final trigger, but goes without saying that governing a province 1000s of miles away with a hostile country in between, would not have been ideal for very long.
