I may be mistaken about this, but I believe he addresses that with the line "Besides, when I saw her raise her hand two years ago, she stopped being a teacher or an adult to me." So it wasn't really about protecting her, more so that he just didn't see her as a teacher.

Araragi presented us every single student (and the teacher too) to the point of talking about their interests, clubs and social circles, so those first few chapters along with a short story called "Challenge to the Readers" released in the Bessatsu Shounen Magazine are an actual puzzle that one could try and solve to find the culprit before Ougi gives them the answer. And the coincidences just keep pilling up! But before we enter the next arc, just some trivia about Sodachi's name and nicknames: Oikura really admires Euler and wanted people to call her that, and it would actually fit her name pretty well! The japanese pronuntiation for "Euler" being "Oira" (just removing the middle part of Sodachi's name), but instead, her classmates would generally call her "How Much", in english, and that's because "Ikura" is "how much" in japanese. Just some of your usual Nisioisin word play in the names of his characters. Her VA is just amazing and has incredible delivery of her lines. Originally, she auditioned for the role of Senjougahara and did so well that Araragi's VA was surprised she didn't get the part. Good thing the directors saved her for later!
