I wouldn’t worry too much about the fan reception in Japan. Most of it was a vocal minority. The type of people that buy blu-rays for anime in Japan are also the minority that would be angry on Twitter about CSM as an anime. Chainsaw Man was an overwhelming success internationally and in Japan in terms of streaming numbers. MAPPA definitely made their bag with it. Although the backlash from some people online plus the “Blu-ray sales narrative” does give bad optics towards the series. If CSM wasn’t as hyped as it was, people wouldn’t even be having this discussion about Blu-ray sales. It’s basically a case of a “it doesn’t matter, until it does” with people online.
