the motel room, or: on datedness

What does it mean for something to be dated? Why am I having an existential crisis in a god-awful. time capsule hotel room?

Square was in these offices until 2021 and a few of these architectural features are still there. But I love this 70s vibe: https://digitallibrary.usc.edu/asset-management/2A3BF19YRCXM?&WS=SearchResults

Since we 'biz travel' on certain jobs occasionally, we've had the dis-fortune to have to stay at less-than-5 star accommodations due to a lack of anything else locally. Having to bring a microwave and wash dishes and cookware in the bathtub was the low point sunk to....'in-room camping' was a new experience...

I've been in a bunch of hotels of varying datedness (also in one where the hallway still smelled like wet paint), but I've never thought about the experience like this. I'm sure I'll remember this the next time when I'm like "better check out early or the renovation crew will be knocking at my door" :)

Probably sharing something everybody knows, but if you want to see websites as they were back in the day, checkout the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

I really should have taken more pictures last Saturday night of the place I was staying in. A former Ramada Inn, just off the A1 at Grantham. Don't think it's had a refit since the mid 00s

Beautiful essay on the passage of time as well as reflections on an experience I have shared many times in many different cities.
