Wrought from the leftover dreams of other Yokai, Baku are living dreams made manifest in spirit form. The exact shape and disposition of each individual Baku is initially determined by the nature of the dreams they were created from. Baku born from sweet dreams are often docile and peaceful, while those spawned from nightmares are instead more menacing and sinister. As ephemeral as dreams themselves, these properties are not set in stone, however, as the Baku’s regular diet consuming the dreams of others can skew them towards resembling those very same dreams over time if they’re not careful.
Baku are slothful by nature, typically slumbering throughout the day, floating about in a dream-like trance, until night falls and mortals begin to dream. Most Baku will visit mortals who invite their presence with murals or other depictions of the sacred beasts, watching over the mortals’ dreams to nourish themselves, and stepping in to devour their nightmares wholesale to ensure a peaceful repose.

Particularly strong Baku may learn to influence the dreams they touch, rather than merely observe and consume them, allowing them to embed suggestions to better, or worsen, the attitudes of the mortals they visit. Exorcists are often called upon when an evil Baku begins plaguing mortals with nightmares in order to feast upon their fear.
