While at rest, the innocuous appearance of this leather-bound tome might cause it to be overlooked at first, but those who spend time in its proximity begin to hear strange whispers that tempt them to peruse its pages. The foul intelligence within the tome slowly learns more about the listener the more its whispers reach them, better understanding what secrets it can offer to coerce them into perusing its pages. Though the codex prefers to seed such whispers in the minds of versed spellcasters who would be more likely to exploit its powers and lose themselves to its embrace, it is not above reaching out to less-learned individuals to slowly drip-feed them magical secrets if they're the only ones around. At last, when in the hands of wizard people, dear reader, the Codex springs to life, manifesting a truly gruesome visage as numerous eyes, maws, and tendrils manifest from it. These fiendish features only grow more numerous and intense the more the Codex has corrupted its owner's soul, tempting them with arcane secrets most foul.
