Ashes of Chaos Chapter 56
Added 2021-03-11 00:19:09 +0000 UTCAs promised, here’s the next chapter of Ashes of Chaos! Apologies this one took a while; the trial scene was a nightmare to write, and I still have some concerns over it. The chapter is at least 11k words though, so hopefully that makes up for the wait.
Also, general FYI that I do not actually edit these before they go up on Patreon. My betas do a very quick scan. The hard editing happens before it goes up on FFN and AO3. So just a preemptive apology for any typos.

Was so great to see James and the old man finally get was coming to them for what they allowed Harry to go through. This is what I would call a start in the retribution that must be done to them for what happened to Harry, but more still needs to be done by them to make up for it. From the old man nothing can make up for his failure to prevent what happened to Harry and from James he might attempt to do some things to make up for it, but I don't see him able to do anything to make any kind of amends to make up for what he allowed to happen to his oldest son, a child by his own blood that he allowed to come by such harm a child that he should have cared for and had a responsibility to look after and failed so terribly that an type of relationship with him is highly unlikely to happen in the near future. I would really like to see how Lily would react to finding out what Harry had been put through because of James negligence and foolishness it would be entertaining to say the least.

2021-08-07 20:29:42 +0000 UTCI thought that this was really good, and I’m excited to see the fallout in terms of how specific people view this, as well as how the public perception of James and Dumbledore are affected here. This will have major consequences, many of which will probably be bad. With Lucius in control of Rita, I’m betting the prophet will do everything it can to turn people against those two and in this case the actual story is bad enough on its own. Lots of interesting foreshadowing too! I can think of a lot of motives for Pettigrew’s actions, but the most obvious one that comes to mind is possibly a play for the custody of the boy who lived. He made James seem like a mental incompetent, especially as a father, so removing him from power over such an important figure would be pretty natural, especially since Peter is the obvious choice for guardian. It could also be as simple as trying to split the liberals on the wizengamot by making sure Dumbledore and James come out of this as badly as possible. I did think that Peters defense was a little bit too lackluster even if he's not an actual lawyer. He could have mentioned the wards, the potential danger to Charlus (and thus anyone living in Potter manor), and/or his ignorance of what exactly was happening at Privet Drive, but he didn’t even try. I realize that losing fit with his strategy (whatever it is), but I think he would have lost anyways, and this made him look like a traitor in my opinion. Whatever his plan is I’m sure that keeping James’s trust is important. Even if James is too shattered by this to think clearly, there's no way that James' other allies won't bring this up. The biggest thing I would recommend changing is that I would have done more to highlight Harry’s meeting with Dumbledore at the end of year 1 and the reactions of the light side to seeing that. I reread that scene and Dumbledore really comes off as a terrible person. All of the other memories show muggles being terrible and wizards being neglectful, but that one specifically shows a revered figure, one who until recently was in charge of a school, behaving like a criminal with a child. Since I doubt he will talk about the prophecy there really is no way for him to defend himself from that memory, and I think it’s the one the public would be most interested in.

2021-03-11 04:58:22 +0000 UTCShould be fixed on the AoC All Chapters page! If that is not what you were referring to let me know and I'll fix it. In the meantime, all chapters follow a pretty set format of aci100.com/[Fic Abbreviation][Chapter Number]/ So for example, chapter 20 of AoC is aci100.com/aoc20/ and chapter 6 of cop is aci100.com/cop6/ and so on and so forth.
