I had to go back and check. It was never actually said that he was strictly a low ranking Keeper. Only that he died while upgrading the warp drive tech. And he was from a tech-majoring world, so research is naturally a large part of it.
2020-07-09 01:19:51 +0000 UTCOh, I'm kinda surprised that they have no genetic research, as Dale and ashley both know that it exist. I would have guessed that Ashley would at least teach them the basics. And be it as a minor branch for pet tamers, to check what beast to pair with what other to get certain traits, with a population of 10's of billions I would have guessed that some of them would at least find some form of evolutionary theories, or if not that at least Mendelian inheritance or something alike should be known? Also surprised that he knows so much about energies , when he was a lower ranked keeper? Guess his world was more about research and not power?
