The Challenger Disaster

There are many tangents and side stories to this disaster that I wasn't able to include in the video. One of them really stuck out to me, though: the story of Barbara Morgan.

Barbara was also selected as part of the Teacher in Space Program, and was to be Christa McAuliffe's backup. She was, in fact, watching the launch from the ground when Challenger exploded. Here's a video of her reaction

For most people, seeing a shuttle explode in flight would be enough to put them off space travel for life. But not Barbara. After the disaster she went on to train as an astronaut, and then took part in a mission to space in 2007. Once that was taken care of, she went right back to being a teacher at Boise State University. By any standard that's a pretty amazing career trajectory!

I can only imagine what it must have been like to see this at school. Thanks for sharing your experience - it really makes me appreciate what a significant disaster this was!

Fascinating Horror

As I was born and raised in New Hampshire and also in middle school when this occurred. I will never forget the screams from everyone, teachers & students alike. The entire middle building was a cacophony of over lapping scream, wailing, and more than a few walls got hit. To this very day I silently count to 74 seconds manned or unmanned. It’s only then that I feel like I can breath again.

I haven't, but it's now on my to-watch list. Having learned a little about the incident (and the space program in general) I'm keen to get more detail.

Fascinating Horror

Had you seen 'The Challenger Disaster: The Biggest Disaster In The History Of NASA' - fantastic docu-film about the event. Very sad day for science and space exploration.
