The Dublin Whiskey Flood

There was one little side story to this piece that I wanted to include, but couldn't quite find space for. It's certainly an interesting one, though, as it shows that animals and people lived in close proximity back in the 1800s, and that this disaster was a pretty terrible time for the city's animal population, too.

The Irish Times reported on what it called "a case of canine suicide". A dog that had drunk from the rivers of whiskey in the street went wild with delirium, ran into a nearby house, attacked the owner, knocked over some furniture, and then - after being fended off with an iron bar - ran upstairs and jumped to its death from an upper floor window.

Between this poor dog and the pigs that were caught in the flood, this was really quite a bad day for the animals of Dublin, as well as the people.

I often wonder how I'd react in a disaster situation... and this is a particularly unique one to be faced with. I feel like it might be kind of difficult just to wrap my head around the reality of what was happening before anything else!

Fascinating Horror

The one is truly crazy! It's been five days and I'm still thinking about what I'd do if I see a flaming flood streaming down the street..

On instinct I'd take the one that isn't on fire... but I believe the molasses flood in Boston ended up being more deadly overall. Hmm.

Fascinating Horror

Which is worse… a flaming flood of whiskey or a sticky flood of molasses? Either way, a horrible situation to be in. Great video!
