The Knickerbocker Theater Collapse

In case I haven't said so before, the Library of Congress in the US is a fantastic resource. As well as an archive of hundreds of thousands of historical images (many of which are free to use) it also compiles excellent resources like this one, which offer suggested sources relating to a given event or person.

In this case it includes almost a dozen newspaper articles from the year following the collapse. Being able to read articles that were written at the time adds so much depth and nuance to a story like this.

And, while we're at it, I find it fascinating to read old newspapers. The way they approach stories and the turns of phrase they use are both very different and oddly similar to what you find in reporting today. I'd absolutely recommend giving these ones a read!

So much old media is lost - it's a real shame. I can't help but be curious...

Fascinating Horror

I checked to see if there was any way to watch “Get Rich Quick Wallingford.” It’s a lost film.

Engineers have a tough job! In a way they have to predict the future - things like how a building will cope in extreme weather conditions and so on. At the same time that lack of interior supports in a building like this does look kind of odd.

Fascinating Horror

As an engineer, it always amazes me the way things were designed and built back then. How such a large structure, with a flat roof, didn’t appear to have any interior support columns, and obviously didn’t compensate for the extra loads due to mother nature! 😒😳
