What is a Pfeilstorch?

One of the storks featured in this video is the Rostocker Pfeilstorch – so called because its taxidermied body resides in the zoological collection of the University of Rostock. It’s such a big deal there that it even features in their logo.
Here’s the website if you happen to be in the area and want to pay it a visit. While there, keep your eyes peeled for a pair of ichthyosaurs and a collection of molluscs from the 18th Century. It might sound like a rather odd and eclectic collection, but I find zoological museums like this thoroughly fascinating!

That's one that's been on my list for a while. It's one of those stories that's so unique it's almost unbelievable. Will be interesting to cover it in detail

2023-06-09 13:56:50 +0000 UTCYou'd be surprised at what kinds of wounds animals can survive, at least initially. For example, there's a trail camera video taken a couple years ago of a deer walking through the woods with a massive hole in it's back. And when I say "massive hole" I mean almost half of its back was completely ripped off. Yet it was still able to walk around for quite some time afterwards presumably out of shear shock and adrenaline. I'm not sure what caused the injury, but it's probably safe to say that the poor creature likely didn't survive for too much longer.
