The Story of Elmer McCurdy

I mention that McCurdy was a rather incompetent bank robber… but it’s worth emphasising just how incompetent he was. As well as blowing up safes (rather than blowing the doors off), his final heist saw him board the wrong train. Rather than getting away with £400,000 in cash, McCurdy left with just over $40… and a couple of demijohns of whisky. These he drank, and was probably still hungover when he was tracked down by law enforcement the next day and shot dead in an hour-long shootout. A pretty dismal final heist, all things considered.

I'll give it a look. So far I've absolutely loved everything I've read about Elmer McCurdy. A very interesting man... although perhaps not in the way he hoped he would be

Ah, yes - that's a unique one. I listened to a podcast about it recently - incredibly deadly for a crash which basically only involved one car. It's on the list... though it might be next year before I cover it!

Got one for you here, bud. It's recentish by FH standards but plenty of negligence to get your teeth into https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoharie_limousine_crash?wprov=sfla1

I can recommend Mark Svenhold’s biography “Elmer McCurdy: The Life and Afterlife of an American Outlaw.” Fun read! Especially all the discussion and controversy over giving him a decent burial. Fun fact: Elmer was found in the funhouse by a production assistant for “The Six Million Dollar Man.”
