The Origin of the Chainsaw

As I say in this video, chainsaws are rarely used in operating theatres these days... but the same doesn't hold true for all power tools. There are a surprising number of stories where an ordinary household drill was used to carry out life-saving emergency treatment.
Here's one story where a doctor borrowed a drill from a maintenance man so he could do some on-the-fly head surgery - which ultimately saved a teenager's life.
And here's a piece about a special cover made to fit over an ordinary drill to keep it sterile and make it more suitable for use in emergency surgery. Sometimes, I guess, you have to make do with what's to hand when things go wrong!
