The World's Most Toxic Animal

Direct link: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-ZaTzk0uCTM

One thing I didn’t mention in this video is how this poisonous frog got its name. For a very long time the indigenous peoples of the Colombian rainforest, including the Emberá-Wounaan and the Cofán, used the poison extracted from these frogs to tip their spears, arrows and blowgun darts. This naturally lead to them being referred to as “poison dart” frogs.

Of course, that’s not the only name they’re known by. When the species was catalogued by herpetologists in 1978 they gave it the name Phyllobates terribilis. Phyllobates is a reference to the genus of this frog… and terribilis is a reference to… well… just how terrible its toxins can be!

Comments

I've heard of this one, though hadn't read up on the exact circumstances. Another reason to be careful about what's allowed on a plane!

Fascinating Horror

For a plane crash with a more bizarre cause to it, how about the 2010 Filair Let L-410 crash? I first heard about it yesterday watching this video discussing unusual deaths (timestamp included): https://youtu.be/7XEerhxBTqI?t=735
