Lost in the Grand Canyon (Part One)

While researching this story (using the excellent book Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon by Michael Ghiglieri and Thomas Myers) I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on one specific detail: would drinking tadpole-infested water be bad for your health?

It’s difficult to find an answer to this one. There are some indications that drinking water with tadpoles in it might put you at higher risk for contracting tapeworm-like parasites. And there’s a lot of evidence that drinking water from a still or stagnant pond can be very bad for your health.

But, in the circumstances of this story, the harms that might come from drinking tadpole-filled water pale when compared to the dangers of dehydration. Tadpole-filled water wouldn’t be my first choice either… but it would be infinitely preferable, when hiking the Canyon, to no water at all.

I'd definitely filter that water through whatever I had available - the very last thing I'd want to do is swallow a live tadpole!

Fascinating Horror

Another crash that ended the lives of every member of a band. I have quite a few on the list at the moment, but will add this one too. Definitely a story I want to cover at some point

I'd like to see a video on the Mamonas Assassinas plane crash. Mamonas Assassinas was a Brazilian satirical rock band who released a single self-titled album. Their career ended when the members were all killed in a plane crash on March 2, 1996. They were on their way home to see their families after performing a show in Brasilia. The plane was a Learjet 25 that had been having some radar issues, even before they ever took off. The pilot decided to abort the landing during final approach and attempted a go-around. As it went around, the plane crashed into the side of a mountain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamonas_Assassinas#The_plane_crash

Kristain, I have come to learn you have a much stronger stomach than I do. Lord help me, if I ever have to resort to tadpole infested water to keep me alive. I just don't know if I could do it, especially since I now know it can give you parasites. But you do what you have to when you are dying of thirst. Thanks for another great video.
