The Big Bayou Canot Disaster

There’s one other notable accident involving the Sunset Limited that also took place in the 1990s – although in the case of this one it’s not particularly clear what happened. In the early hours of the morning on the 9th of October, 1995, the Sunset Limited derailed in the Arizona desert.

One person (a conductor) was killed, and nearly 100 were injured. Worse still, an investigation revealed that this had been a deliberate act. The rails had been sabotaged so that the train would derail… but it had been done in such a way that approaching train would get no warning. Notes signed “Sons of Gestapo” and describing an anti-government agenda were found at the site.

In 2015, the FBI announced that they were close to discovering who carried out this act of sabotage, and why. Since then, however, there doesn’t seem to have been any further developments. To this day the reason for the derailment, and the identity of the culprits, remains a mystery. I wonder if, almost three decades on from the event itself, we’ll ever find out?

That's a new one to me - looks like an accident that lead to the closure of the airline. And understandably so! Will add it to my list...

Fascinating Horror

I did - I wrote the script. It's a really good and telling quote into the chaos that night.

How about a video on Chalk's Ocean Airways Flight 101? It crashed off the coast of Miami Beach in 2005 due to metal fatigue ripping off the right wing during flight, killing all 20 people on board. A tourist who happened to be visiting Miami Beach at the time managed to record a video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fgr3rwC7BQ There's also an episode of Mayday about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiOH8pUl5_s

I thought I recognized that quote you used for John Turk describing Mr. Quaintance's situation. You pulled that quote directly from Mr. Turk's interview for the Seconds from Disaster episode about this incident. I loved that show back in the day.
