The Winecoff Hotel Fire

In this video I mention the hugely influential photograph taken by Arnold Hardy. It’s an interesting one, because it’s one of the last photographs he took. Although he had a keen interest in photography, he gave it up after winning the Pulitzer Prize, as he believed all his future work would be measured against that one incredibly high-profile image. He went on to become a mechanical engineer, and started a business making x-ray equipment. He lived a long life, had a son, and retired in 1993.

As for Daisy McCumber – the women featured in the picture – she was very seriously injured. She broke her back, both legs and her pelvis. She did walk again, although following numerous operations, she also lost one leg. She never told the family she went on to have that she was the woman in the picture. Since most captions at the time reported that the woman in the picture died as a result of her fall, it must have been quite the mystery for those who knew her!
