You might be wondering what became of the town of Antelope which was destroyed by this disaster. At the time, it consisted of only around 30 buildings: a post office, a general store and a handful of homes. The Roseville Yard explosions practically wiped it off the map.
It wasn’t until the late 1980s that Antelope was rebuilt… albeit in a very different form. A large swathe of houses and apartment buildings were constructed as a planned new community, and the town was recognized once again by the US Postal Service in 1994.
Since then it’s grown to have a population of nearly 50,000 with multiple schools, parks and businesses. It’s considerably larger than the “old” Antelope that was wiped out by the explosion. I wonder if this community would ever have developed this way if the disaster hadn’t taken place?
