Future title

So, Starlust was going to be my next game after Tailor Tales. The concept was that you'd sign up for a dating app, and be able to chat with singles and take them out on dates. Casual, more realistic, and just fun.
With the release of The Ssum, a mobile game by Cheritz, they focused on a single LI and you could chat with him. Riddled with microtransactions, and general ways to block the player from progressing to encourage them to spend money, lots of people ended up getting annoyed at the game. They also found the LI, Teo, really boring.

It doesn't help the translation is pretty bad so you have no idea what they're saying.
Anyways.
It really got me thinking about my future title. It won't be riddled with microtransactions, and you could date more than one LI - but still, maybe a chat simulator without a story or plot isn't that interesting in the long run.
So I was already thinking of a different concept. I'd still like the chatting part to stay, but I think a cool concept would be if you were to log into a 'fake' game, an online RPG, where you'd meet partymembers. You can befriend these people and chat with them, eventually date them. The fake game would be a dungeon crawler type game, and you'd actually traverse through these dungeons (though it would be relatively simple gameplay) and meet new people. There would also be a story.
Whilst working on Aiden's route and making the chat simulator as well as the small League-type game, I thought it would be nice if you could actually play the in-universe game yourself. More immersive that way. So the dungeon crawler idea sounds nice to me.
Still, I'd love to hear your input! I know the previous poll had quite a bit of 50/50 on the RPG-idea and the chat idea, so perhaps people would enjoy a mash-up of them.
So what type of game would interest you more?

Actually I play visual novels to relax. Both ideas sound quite exhausting to me. Idk if you know "Our life"? It's a real nice VN on Steam you can play for free and the option to send messages to your boyfriend (you pick an answer from a list of diffrent options) was real funny and a cute way to get to know each other better. As in like a mini game. But I wouldn't play a game that's only built around messaging so I'd wanted to answer "neither". As you pointed out in Caines route already the Internet/Media is a real difficult way to get to know anybody for real. Because you can easily hide behind an avatar or troll your way through the online games. I really hope you'll reconsider and stick to what you're doing great - writing visual novels with interesting characters and good, solid plot.

2022-12-01 08:58:27 +0000 UTCSo far, Tailor Tales can be kept going indefinitely! It's a compilation of stories after all. Eeyok is the 7th route, but there's nothing that says it should stop there; there can be an 8th route as well.

2022-10-23 04:34:22 +0000 UTCI've already fallen in love with tailor tales, I think genuinely anything you make will be so amazing! I look forward to this future project of yours! <3
2022-09-01 10:28:58 +0000 UTCAh yes, I loved .Hack (actually I think I forgot there were games β I read/watched a few of the series as a teen) and have been wishing for an otome set in a similar scenario! :) I think there are one or two out but either not localized or not very well done. Boyfriend Dungeon has sold/reviewed pretty well, but I think fails to super satisfy people who love otome style games or people who are into RPGs, which is pretty common when you split genres like that. Definitely a good one to check out if you decide to go this route! I think the problem is if it feels like something is getting in the way of the player experience, is it worth doing (I think about this a lot when working through user experience problems in the games I develop)? It might be cool to come up with a way to -simulate- the player having gone off on an RPG quest without actually having them do so. One thing that comes to mind (totally not relevant since it would be time based, which is a whole different kind of game!) is a system like Mystic Messenger where you can see your little hero icon slowly go from the beginning of a dungeon to the end of one over the course of X real time and they can pick up item/have mini encounters along the way in a passive fashion. Sorry for the ramble, itβs much more fun thinking of -other peopleβs games- than the one Iβve been debugging for the last several months! :) β Ah a random other RPG reference, DragonAge Inquisition does an -amazing- job of developing character relationships while youβre out and about questing. They have a series of conversations that slowly progress depending on the party members you bring out (so if you bring A and B out with you regularly you can see them starting to fall for each other). Very cool stuff if you havenβt seen it.

2022-08-25 20:22:04 +0000 UTCI've honestly been looking for more of the first option, but the second option sounds just as speaking! I can't wait to see what you do luv!

2022-08-25 15:06:35 +0000 UTCone of the many reasons why i've enjoyed aiden's route thus far is the rpg elements. it adds such a rich layer to the game play and if it's anything remotely like that i will be very happy.

2022-08-25 00:25:32 +0000 UTCOf course, it'll have two elements, but it's just on par with many other RPG games with dating elements. Except my focus would be the relationships, and the dungeon crawling would be reduced to a minimum/quick endeavor so that it wouldn't annoy the player, and it wouldn't be too much for me to code. I haven't played Boyfriend Dungeon but have heard of it! The concept would be similar, though the focus would definitely be on developing a relationship with your party and progressing the story which influences the fake game. Ever heard of the series .Hack? Huge fan of it when I was in my teens. That's definitely where I'm drawing inspiration from. You would go through dungeons with party members and when you'd log out, you could manage your PC and e-mail your party members or read the forums. I quite enjoyed this part of the game!

2022-08-24 23:41:02 +0000 UTCGame dev here, so possibly overthinking it, but just my two cents :) Have you checked out possible references like Boyfriend Dungeon? Developing a game with two genres often means one element is notably dissatisfying or the end product is dissatisfying or not cohesive. Developing a game with heavy narrative elements + a satisfying mechanic is really tough -- it's basically twice the work. Ultimately, though, I think it comes down to what interests you?
2022-08-24 22:56:47 +0000 UTCI still love the original concept but I have to admit the new one intrigued me a bit more!
