Topic Question
Added 2024-12-19 18:00:09 +0000 UTCName a director you think is overrated, and why. Remember that if I've covered them before on a previous topic, I likely won't again, unless there's something interesting you offer in your opinion that could be worth discussing.

Scorsese. His entire reputation is based on making gangster/street criminal/mob films. I get that he was new in the 1970's and perhaps spoke to an American audience with a sense of 'realism' (I'm not an American), but for me his famous movies celebrate the capitilist ideal that - hey! even if you blow people away with guns you can make a ton of money. Albeit with a supposed 'dark psychological look at he world of criminals.' As a director he clearly admires these characters. Haha - isn't Joe Peci soooo funny when he shoots people in the knee caps... And when Scorsese steps away from these genre movies audiences (and critics) tend to ignore whatever he's attempting. Does anyone really think The Age Of Innocence or Kundun or New York, New York are 'great' films? For me, The Aviator is his best film. Perhaps that says more about me than his work!

However, the rest I've seen mostly bore me because he spends too much time on abstractions and colorful side characters at the expense of a compelling main character. Especially, Marcello Mastroianni's characters in both La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 which drag those otherwise solid films down.

El Conde was a vampire film with no teeth. Maria is already fading from memory, despite having watched it two days ago. At least Jackie offered a compelling look at how she used her Life magazine interview to craft the Camelot mythos that still defines the Kennedys today. I walk away from his films more disappointed than not.
