Which Scorsese film do you prefer more?

I recently saw Taxi Driver in 4K in the theaters, and it got me thinking about this question quite differently than I had before. What's your opinion?

This is such an incredible topic. I’ve gone back and forth for years, even trying to wedge Goodfellas in just to take the pressure off. I’m 48, so from 18 to about 40, Raging Bull was my top pick, having seen both films multiple times on the big screen at revival houses. But Taxi Driver took the lead when I saw its 40th-anniversary screening at the Beekman here in NYC, and I landed on THE thing: TAXI DRIVER is above all else a complete original. There’s nothing remotely like it. It’s completely unique. A few things large a small: the brandy on the cereal, “Easy Andy,” the catastrophic date, building the gun slide with a drawer runner, the LLRP Mohawk, the Late for the Sky moment while watching American Bandstand, and a character — letting his TV fall back and blow — signaling he’s totally unpredictable. The SCORE. And for my money a PERFECT ending. It’s actually currently the top of my 10 GOAT list for this reason. And possibly the most raw, honest, singular example of malignant rage male rage in any film, including RAGING BULL.

I was able to catch a 35mm screening of Raging Bull in NY a couple years back, I think that sealed the deal for me

Hands down, Taxi Driver is more influential and almost feels timeless in its depiction of New York. Raging Bull is a great film too, but doesn’t have the staying power of Taxi Driver. I mean, John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate the President of the United States to impress Jodie Foster. You don’t get that kind of influence from Raging Bull. You marvel at its cinematic achievement in the world of cinema and other filmmakers have been influenced over the style of the film. But that’s about it.

I rewatched Raging Bull recently and it's fantastic but I love Mean Streets more. It's a toss up between it and Taxi Driver for my favorite Scorsese film.

These results are exactly what I expected. But...I'm team Raging Bull currently.

Taxi Driver is such a prescient film depicting male depression leading to derangement and rage. Hard to beat that. I also enjoy the subversion of depicting it as a story of a loner trying to turn his life around but rather than have any success he just becomes more unhinged. I find it fairly timeless — well, except for obvious 70s environment and style. Raging Bull is a good movie but it doesn’t have any of that.
