THE BIKERIDERS - Two Things

One - amiright that Tom Hardy full on sounds like Nate Diaz in this movie, timbre-wise??? Uncanny. Seriously lol. I was laughing at the thought the entire time. And people have been agreeing with me a lot. Why am I the only one who made the comparison?

But two - ya'll know my love for Michael Shannon. And many of you cringe at the thought. You are all just misinformed ;). You bet your ass I've been revisiting all the Shannon interviews with Jimmy Fallon since this film came out. Shannon brings me endless amounts of joy. If you haven't gone down the Shannon Youtube rabbit hole with his interviews, I highly recommend it. He's a character for sure, beyond just being one of the best actors in Hollywood. I wish his character in the film hadn't been reduced to comic relief and condescension so much, but he really brings out the tragedy magnificently on his own, which the film needed. I felt more tragedy from him in a single moment, compared to any of the leads. This is not the fault of the leads at all. Shannon is just that impressive to me as a performer. He can do theater or cinematic acting with equal ease, and that is incredibly rare.

His criterion closet vid has become such a meme.

My favorite from Michael Shannon hands down is The Iceman (I think that's the title), where he plays the real life hitman the 'Iceman', from the 70s and 80s. It's the only movie I've seen of his where he plays the lead. It also stars the late Ray Liotta.

The only two certainties in life are death and deepfocuslens’ love for Michael Shannon.

1. Because you’re a huge MMA fan lol. Also I think since its a period piece people are more likely to think of an actor from that time. Like with Butler resembling James Dean. It’d be funny though if he based all of his performances on MMA fighters like Johnny Depp does with rock stars. Like Doroharm I was more taken with Comer’s accent. The Goodfellas vibes where definitely flowing especially early on. 2. He’s definitely one of the things to look forward to in any Jeff Nichols movie. His visit to the Criterion Closet is one of my favorites. https://youtu.be/Ewx-oog2kmQ?si=zVOtgOi_IdgcwIBp “This makes up for all the Christmases where I didn’t get much of anything… I’m such a lucky boy.” My personal favorite recently is him randomly lugging around a bag of chips at the Met Gala. https://x.com/THR/status/1787640797652803971

I enjoyed Tom Hardy’s accent, but I think Jodie Comer’s probably wins top prize haha Still though, for some reason I can’t get out of my head the idea of what would it have been like if someone like Jon Bernthal had been cast in that role. Someone with a little more of a relatable down-home charisma. But still I liked what he was doing with a slightly quirky Brando homage. And I unabashedly love Michael Shannon with a passion. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how much we saw him in the movie! I knew he was gonna be in it because….Jeff Nichols, duh lol But he was hardly in the trailers or marketing at all which led me to think he was only gonna be in it for like a scene (Like Gary Oldman in True Romance or Ned Beatty in Network). But we ended up getting a LOT more of him than I thought, and each time was super impactful for me, honestly. I thought the condescension, comedy, and tragedy were all perfectly balanced and very purposeful, personally.

What’s your favorite performance of Michael Shannon’s? Mine is Curtis in Take Shelter. Such a visceral performance from Shannon in that film. Not saying he’s not powerful in his other roles, but that one takes the cake for me.
