This comic was inspired by those grand, majestic statues and paintings of Poseidon riding a chariot pulled by elegant sea horses. I thought it’d be fun to completely break that divine, epic image… with something utterly ridiculous. Like cartoonishly awkward blobfish who are anything but majestic.
While working on it, I learned something unexpected: blobfish only look “ugly” when they’re brought to the surface, due to the drastic change in pressure. Deep underwater, they’re actually kind of cute and graceful!
I almost paused the comic when I found that out… but honestly, it fits the story even better. These blobfish are so eager to pull Poseidon’s chariot, they’re willing to rise to the surface and go full derp-mode for the honor. 😄
Fun fact: I also wanted to see how far AI has come in comic creation, so I asked ChatGPT to generate a version of this comic.
I was honestly impressed (and a bit freaked out) by how far it’s gotten… it's not there yet but I can see it's definitely close.
Just to be clear — I am not planning on making AI comics!!! I love drawing way too much for that, and I’m deeply against the fact that these models are trained on artists’ work without their consent. I’m just trying to understand what the future holds for us as artists.)
