The Naronian Legion has many traditions most would consider rather... barbaric. "The Mark of the Chosen" is told to be a badge of honour among the legionnaires. A mark to show that your training is complete.
However, it also discourages desertion.
This shows Kane getting his Mark of the Cosen at the end of his military training. How you react to the branding is said to mirror the rest of your service...

2025-07-27 00:48:30 +0000 UTCIt's on the side of the back of the neck, not directly on the spine. Still you're correct, and they're provided with a rare period of permission to recover. During that period, they're guarded by medical staff to reduce eventual fever and gets regular treatment, for the scar to develop into a firm yet supple hide. The placement is to prevent any deserters from removing the skin. This will become a plot point in Haze's story later.

2025-07-26 23:06:06 +0000 UTCThat is seriously messed up... Although honestly neck/spine is a really bad place for a brand (scar tissue that could impair movement, possible nerve/spine damage.) The butt or thighs would be a far better location (same as with livestock), though it wouldn't allow for the dignity of this piece.
