Designing Wyit's jacket

The way I work digitally in my comic is very modular, meaning I can easily make cosmetic changes if I figure out a better way to depict something appearing in it. In this case, Wyit's jacket which he acquires in the 2nd half of the story.

I've had the basic design down for a while and knew it had those prominent rolled sleeves we've seen in most my images. But, I've been a little vague about how its collar works, its hem length, pocket placement, and what the heck I should put on the shoulder areas to keep it from being blank fabric. An old flight patch? Epaulettes? Huge Judge Dredd-esque shoulder pads?

Right now I'm leaning towards the deltoid/upper arm portions of the jacket having some kinda magnetic or clamping buttons or button-holes that would normally be used to secure optional shoulder pauldrons to (since this is an old airborne military surplus jacket), but it's pretty stripped down to its fabric base when Wyit gets it.

Styling jacket!

Hey Aimee! I did have one previous version with some old epaulette, but it felt a little too close to real world uniform stuff for me. At least the way I drew it at that time. I think the tri-buttoned pauldron buttons will probably stick, since it echoes some of the existing shape language in the comic (ie: Rek's helmet knobs and the 3 ventilation holes). When in doubt I just do whatever reinforces pre-existing designs, it just becomes a puzzle of doing it in a way that serves a functional purpose.

Thanks Dan! I never actually followed Steve Gallacci much since he was way before my online time... But I remember always trying to find this Albedo comic that always came up whenever I tried to find anthropomorphic stuff in print media.

Gosh those are gorgeous sketches. This ink style reminds me a lot of Steve Gallacci.

Maybe you could also add an old, faded epaulette that's barely legible? Just an idea. These are some of the RCAF's, which hearkens back to Canada's loyalty with Britain. https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/military-history/history-heritage/insignia-flags/ranks/air-force-ranks.html
