Editing with the "Starry Nights" Presets

Angel Fux used her Starry Nights Lightroom/Photoshop presets as a starting point for her post processing edits to her Peruvian Andes nightscape, "The Shot Above".

On page 193 of my Milky Way NightScapes eBook version 2.0, I state this about Lightroom Presets:

Photographers often ask me what I think about Lr presets. By definition, a Lightroom preset is a saved group of photo-editing settings that transforms your images with just a click of the preset. You then have the flexibility to adjust the settings that best fit the image you are editing.

The advantage of a preset is that it can give you a consistent look and style to your work. Presets are also a fast way to explore and try out a variety of looks for your image. The disadvantage is when presets become a crutch that keeps you from pushing yourself into more creative realms. Some of the cheaper presets are no more than just a set of digital filters.

Although I’m not a big fan of Lightroom presets, Angel Fux’s Starry Nights - Milky Way Presets Collection is one of the few I’d recommend if you like using presets to edit your nightcapes. Her presets provided an excellent starting point, and even a finished look if you are doing single exposures.

Depth: What makes Angel Fux’s preset collection uniquely different is its depth. This collection has about 80 presets. There are roughly 25 or more presets for each Canon, Nikon or Sony camera brand—divided between astro-modified and non-modified sensors. Most people will find two or three presets that offer a solid starting point for any given image, depending on light pollution or atmospheric conditions.

See my own Before/After Tests using Angel's presets in the PDF below. It also includes a promo code to get a 20% discount on Angel Fux's preset collection, which works with both Lightroom and Photoshop. This PDF download is accessible to all my NightScaper "Supporting" Patrons (who subscribe for $3/month or more). NOTE: This PDF page will be included in my next eBook update (version 2.1), expected in late February or early March 2026. This will be a free update to all my Supporting Patrons, and it will include several new pages on nightscape post processing.
