He met Dr. Marcoh during the war. Dr. Marcoh was ordered to create the Philosopher’s Stone, while Dr. Knox was tasked with gathering data on the effects of burns and pain on humans. He even worked with Roy at the time. They talked about how there was still a doctor couple out in the field treating Ishvalans. Dr. Marcoh said they were fools, calling it a suicidal act. But Dr. Knox said, on one hand, you have doctors who follow orders to kill, and on the other hand, there’s the Rockbell couple, who stayed with the powerless and chose to save lives. Then he asked Dr. Marcoh, “I’m a doctor—so why am I killing people?” Because of that, Dr. Knox started feeling he had no right to treat living patients, and he became a pathologist after the war. He also developed PTSD, and once attacked his wife in his sleep — that’s why they got divorced.
