I think the ridiculously tall beds are mostly a hotel thing. Most personal beds I'm aware of are of a fairly normal height.

2020-05-26 12:15:29 +0000 UTCI’m European who immigrated to USA. One can get beds of different heights in USA, if you really wish. I do have the one that is taller and use space below as storage. Sort of combination of EU style bed, but just lifted up. When I asked about hight of USA beds, I got explanation that hight is connected with health issues. Taller beds are easier to get out of, so anyone with week knees, disability, injuries, or obesity can get up easier. And that’s true, when I injured my knee in skiing accident, I was happy to have tall bed, because I could get up without using my injured knee at all.
