Just a little addition to your comments about how the town accepts Luca and Alberto . . . it's really subtle, but there are some of the townspeople who scowl and leave very upset that Massimo is protecting the boys. The director wanted this so the ending was more like the reality that Alberto and Luca still have an uncertain future living among humans. The fact that the rain never stops, but it stays cloudy and dark for the rest of the film is an important clue that the story doesn't really have a happy ending because the boys may have difficult times ahead as they live in a world where some will not accept them. This story is based on the director's real life experience of being an immigrant and leaving his family and his best friend behind in Italy.
