Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (the second one) is WAY more accurate and true to the original book/story in every single way and is also the version the the Dahl family themselves much prefer! Roald Dahl absolutely DESPISED the Gene Wilder version lmao

Like someone else said, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the same story, just with a more Tim Burton/Johnny Depp edge. The songs are closer to the book but that's really the only improvement. Gene Wilder IS Wonka - completely unhinged genius who you can't tell what he's thinking at any moment. The first moment we meet him (the feeble cane walk into the forward roll) was entirely unscripted and improved by Wilder himself, as a way of showing how unpredictable he is right from the get go. He's mad, he's crazy, he loves chocolate, and by golly Wilder plays it beautifully. If you want to see more films starring Gene Wilder - he's a comic mastermind and so great at reactions - I'd check out Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles for his work with Mel Brooks, and Silver Streak and Stir Crazy for his comedy alongside Richard Pryor.
