I think I think those in charge of production of media of this nature build up people's expectations by incorporating stuff like the combination of CGI and voice over before we're compelled to ask for it, so that we end up adapting to its presence and normalizing it on that basis.

It's funny you enjoyed just the voices without the mouths moving because I instantly thought of the 101 Dalmations live action with Glenn Close. Which I see is in your reactions. The way Disney portrayed emotion for that one from the animals without ANY voice acting was MAGIC. You were also talking about how they use CGI now but I think they still have animal actors/actresses. One movie that comes to mind for example is A Dog's Way Home. For the home scenes, you don't have to CGI those therefore use a real dog or cat in it. Wilderness shots however wouldn't be ok today like it was because they can get hurt and require a replacement for the film to be completed.

There seems to be a real mindset of extremity these days, where people at least suggest they believe that if you involve a live animal in your production at all, it's animal cruelty, and there just shouldn't be direct contact with them, but I like the idea of humans and animals working harmoniously to bring this kind of work into being. A good trainer on set will do everything possible to make sure no harm comes to the animals, but how it's possible to train cats to perform tasks of this level of complexity and specificity is beyond me.

You would hope that kids getting acclimated to their step parents is something that happens in real life.

I figure they cast a darker Golden Retriever to play Shadow so the audience wouldn't mix him up with Comet.

Check out Peter's voice breaking. I think the scene where they leave the farm was shot last.

Chance is an American Bulldog, but in the sequel, he's a boxer, apparently because boxes can jump much higher

💭 Maybe it would be a cool Independence Day / Canada Day thing if you reposted the sequel next.
