Just pulled my first video in a long long time

Welp was bound to happen sooner or later haha.

Made a quick video on how you can easily customize wall plates / outlet plates. Posted it earlier today and quickly had a flurry of comments saying how dangerous it is to use non certified materials for those.

Definitely do not want to lead to anyone burning their house/apartment down etc.

I might stick with the blank plate covers that I printed for the studio to help cover up the 50+ ethernet ports that I wont be using (would make for some epic LAN parties though). But will stick with buying store versions of the covers that I need for now.

HUGE HUGE New Project coming tomorrow! Easily starting the largest 3D Printing project that I've ever attempted to date and have already screwed it up hahaha

FYI doing some testing with the Neptune 3 Pro .6 nozzle & working on trying to build some Cura profiles... I hate cura with a passion by the way but love all you goobers ;)

Comments

I still think the low voltage plates are perfectly safe for audio cables, coax, and Cat6 applications.

I just tried prusa and the bed adhesion is crazy, was a struggle to get the brims off, gonna turn those off for now 😂

I’m still new to 3d printing and have been using cura as that’s what I saw on Elegoo’s site, it can take a looooooooong time to slice some things though, Prusa I’ve heard can be a bit daunting but wouldn’t mind trying it out or simplofy3d, lychee also has a FDM slicer which is easy to use as well but some features are locked down

Luke Shepherd

Wonder if the fake Disney themed light switch covers at the dollar store are safe and approved?

I would have to agree with Robert on this one. My father AND grandfather were both electricians, grandfather for the railroad and father was industrial, commercial, and residential, and myself I am an electronics engineer. The most dangerous part/issues are what is BEHIND the plate NOT the plate itself. Both the certified plate and 3d printer one is made from PLASTIC. They are BOTH going to melt in a fire. The plate itself DOESN'T cause the fire. Usually if there is an electrical fire from the outlet or switch it goes UP the line. You are completely safe making your own plates.

Jeremy Davis

No worries, I loved the video and it's a great way to save money.

ROBERT VANTINE

As someone with no electrical knowledge, I would have thought so? I mean, people do make light switch covers that I'm pretty sure aren't "certified" but then it might be a combination of non conductive material, heat resistance and wizard magic?

Michael Tharme

Also, electrical plugs, switches and plug-boards are made up of thermosetting plastics BECAUSE ITS A BAD CONDUCTOR OF ELECTRICITY. It doesn't allow the electric current to pass through it, thus safe in using in electric appliances

ROBERT VANTINE

Well the list for ul certification includes; wood, steel, brass, bronze, copper, thermoset plastics, aluminum, nickel, and bakelite

ROBERT VANTINE

I also eagerly aware your Cura profiles (hopefully for the Elegoo and the ender 3?) filament printing is giving me a dam headache atm understanding the profile settings for decent quality with reasonable speedy prints for the work pla farm.

Michael Tharme

Really wondering if light switch plates are okay vs outlets

Uncle Jessy

Thanks! I guess better safe than sorry

Uncle Jessy

Prusa slicer & Simplofy3d right now

Uncle Jessy

Now that’s a cool idea!

Uncle Jessy

It's a real shame as the idea does have some really practical grounds, I suppose it just needs to case of digging a little deeper on what are required specifics for electrical coverings.

Michael Tharme

What tends to be advised for the type of plastics used for the certified stuff?

Michael Tharme

That's a good idea, like custom covers or art pieces so it's not just a blank surface.

Michael Tharme

Speaking as a firefighter you are just as safe using 3D printed covers on outlets and switches as you are using the "certified" ones. The fire hazard comes from the electrical connections not the cover plate

ROBERT VANTINE

You could always make something that could attach to the certified plates though. So an outer shell.

James DiFrancesco

What slicer do you like to use for the N3 Pro?

J. Labs 3D Studio
