Hey Everyone!
12 years ago, I was working at my desk on the Space Cadet book. I had done some preliminary storyboards, and was now doing the final illustrations on scratchboard. I calculated that I had several months of "desk time" ahead of me. I also knew many artists and animators in the city that were also just working away quietly in their home studios.
I thought to myself, "Why don't we host an event where people can come hang out and work on their personal projects. We could set up little drawing desks for everyone and I can play my favorite focus music or "drawing records".
I rented a small theatre on Saint Catherine Street downtown for 3 consecutive Mondays that winter. We brought in the mini drawing desks and hung string lights to make the room feel a little more cozy.
It was the middle of winter, with consistent sub zero temperatures.
I didn't know if anyone would show up.
But on the inaugural night of the event, Montreal didn't disappoint. People came and drew, painted, created 3D environments on their laptops, knit, wrote screenplays and worked quietly together in the same room. Some people even brought clay to sculpt action figures and a dress loom to work on a jacket design. It was all very inspiring to see.
Over the years, we've brought the event all over the world and I continue to host these events each winter in Montreal (except last winter). The concept has expanded into the studio with a Music To Draw To album series and currently a weekly virtual livestream.
I was invited to do some sort of activation at the Salvador Dalí exhibit. It's a new exhibit of over a hundred of his pieces including some that have never been shown before!
When I saw the space I thought it could be a good fit for a Music To Draw To Session. We've brought the drawing tables down to the space. So you can view the Dalí exhibit and then join us in the foyer and make some art if you wish. I'll be playing from 7pm-10pm each Wednesday in October.
Here we are again. 12 years later. As Montreal slowly opens up after the strangest 1.5 years.
I'm not sure if anyone will show up.
But in any case, I'm excited to be able to play in my hometown and that my first live appearance since the pandemic started will be hosting one of my favorite art community events.
If you're in Montreal and interested in joining us, you can find more info here and tickets here.
Okay I have to go now and do an actual real life sound check! WOOT!
Take care everyone!
E
