[Marvel's Magic Master] Chapter 274: The Century-Old Mission

While one of George’s avatars was busy hunting dragons in the world of Harry Potter, another of his avatars in Fairy Tail finally received new intel about dragons from Makarov.

"George, I’ve noticed that you’ve been inquiring about dragons a lot lately."

Makarov sat at the bar, sipping his drink with a serious expression as he addressed George.

George nodded.

"Yes, Master. I’ve been researching a particular magic, but in order to master it, I need to become a Dragon Slayer first.

So, I must find a Dragon Lacrima within the next two months."

Two months—about the same amount of time he needed to complete his Animagus transformation.

"I see."

Makarov hesitated for a long moment before making a decision. Then, he spoke slowly:

"Since this will help you advance in your magic, and considering your strength, you may be capable of handling it. So, I’ll tell you.

Have you ever heard of the Century-Old Mission?"

If this had been earlier, he wouldn’t have even considered telling George about the mission. Even though George was as strong as an S-Class Wizard, it was still an extremely dangerous undertaking.

That’s why, despite Natsu’s constant search for dragons, Makarov had never revealed anything to him—he was afraid Natsu’s recklessness would get him killed.

However, after hearing Erza’s report about the Tower of Heaven incident, Makarov started to think that George might actually have a chance at succeeding.

"The Century-Old Mission… You mean the legendary highest-difficulty mission that no one in the magic world has ever completed? It involves dragons?"

George’s eyes lit up instantly.

Makarov nodded.

"Yes, it is indeed related to dragons, but I can't reveal any details. You’ll only learn the specifics if you accept the mission and reach the location.

But I must warn you—this mission has remained unfinished for a hundred years, and every wizard who has taken it has failed… and died.

Even Gildarts Clive, our guild’s strongest S-Class wizard, took on this mission three years ago and has yet to return or send any word back."

"Gildarts Clive… The S-Class wizard everyone talks about?"

George’s interest was piqued. He had heard of Gildarts before—rumored to be exceptionally powerful.

"Yes, though he’s an S-Class wizard, I need to tell you this—his actual strength surpasses mine.

And if even he hasn’t completed this mission in three years, you need to think carefully before making a decision."

Makarov’s expression grew even more solemn.

"If he’s stronger than you, then that puts him at the level of the Ten Wizard Saints. A Wizard Saint has been missing for three years without any news… That certainly sounds like no ordinary mission. No wonder it’s related to dragons."

George frowned in thought before flicking his tail and replying:

"Since it involves dragons, I want to give it a try. Who knows? I might even run into Gildarts, and we could complete the mission together."

Was the mission dangerous?

Of course. His overall strength was around the level of a Wizard Saint. If Gildarts had been missing for three years, that meant even a Wizard Saint couldn’t handle it.

To put it bluntly, George suspected that Gildarts might already be dead.

However, George was different. He wasn’t accepting this mission just to complete it—he was looking for dragon-related clues to become a Dragon Slayer.

So, whether or not he actually completed the mission didn’t matter.

If he encountered something he couldn’t handle, he would simply abandon the mission and escape.

One thing was certain—when it came to escaping, he had absolute confidence.

If he wanted to flee, even ten Wizard Saints working together wouldn’t be able to stop him easily.

That said, he was somewhat surprised that Makarov was willing to tell him about this mission.

After all, Fairy Tail’s financial stability currently depended on his repair magic, which had put the guild’s economy back on a positive trajectory.

If he left to undertake the Century-Old Mission, the guild would return to its previous state of financial struggle. And if he died during the mission, Makarov might completely break down.

Makarov would probably have to slowly study the repair spells George had left in the library.

But thinking about it, this aligned perfectly with Makarov’s personality. The Guild Master had always encouraged his wizards to fearlessly pursue their magical paths—even if it meant driving the guild to bankruptcy, he had never wavered.

Now that George was seeking dragons to advance his magic, Makarov naturally supported him, prioritizing his magical growth over other concerns.

"Since you’ve made your decision, take on the mission after the Harvest Festival ends."

Seeing that George was determined, Makarov didn’t say anything more, but he did remind him:

"Your life is the most important thing. If you can’t complete the mission, you can always try again in the future."

Although Makarov encouraged George to boldly pursue his magical path, as the Guild Master, he saw every wizard in Fairy Tail as his own child—he didn’t want them to die because of a mission.

"I understand, Master."

George nodded. He had always believed that survival came first.

The annual Harvest Festival was Fairy Tail’s most important celebration. On that day, nearly every guild wizard who could make it back would return for the festivities, and in the evening, Fairy Tail would hold a magical parade through town.

Many citizens from neighboring towns would also visit to witness the spectacle, making the entire town lively and festive.

And tomorrow was the Harvest Festival. The entire town was already being decorated, and there were even rumors of a Miss Fairy Tail beauty pageant during the day. Erza, Mirajane, and several other female wizards had already signed up to participate.

"By the way, has Jellal returned?"

After recovering, Jellal had officially joined Fairy Tail and formed a small team with some former Tower of Heaven members to take on missions.

A few days ago, Jellal had informed Makarov that he had some personal matters to handle and had temporarily left.

George didn’t know the details, but he had seen some of Jellal’s memories and suspected it had something to do with dealing with his past connections to the dark guilds.

Back when Jellal was manipulated by Ultear, he had studied magic under a dark wizard—the leader of Oración Seis, one of the three most powerful dark guilds.

Oración Seis was strong, but Jellal was no pushover. So, George wasn’t too worried.

Still, as guildmates, it was only natural to check in on him.

More importantly, George had been learning Celestial Magic from Jellal and still had many unanswered questions.

"He sent a message via Magic Lacrima saying he hasn’t finished dealing with his matters yet. He probably won’t make it back in time for the festival," Makarov replied, waving his hand dismissively.

"That’s a shame."

George sighed. He had hoped that if Jellal returned in time, he could ask him more questions about Celestial Magic before heading off on the Century-Old Mission.

Now, it looked like he’d have to wait until after the mission—or until he became a Dragon Slayer—to continue his studies.
