The city of L'Escala (Empuries - Hispania)

Last week we visited the amazing ruins of the ancient city of Empuries. Founded in the 6th century BC by Greek colonists. It flourished because of it's outstanding location for trade. After the second Punic war, the Romans took over and they built a typical Roman city right behind the Greek settlement.

The city had a grand forum, walls and an amphitheatre. It has some very well preserved mosaic floors and a large temple dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. His statue still stands proud in the local museum.

Lastly, the two large driking cups caught my attention, I wonder how it feels to drink wine out of a giant terracota penis, but I guess the whole idea behind getting drunk is that you just don't care anymore!

This sums up my family trip around southern France and northern Spain, the ammount of ancient history here is beyond belief. And if any of you needs help in convincing the family that ancient ruins are fun, you know where to find me;)
