Tapa Update #12 - Computer Says "No".
Added 2025-04-22 08:46:38 +0000 UTCToday, a little tale of how a small thing can derail your whole operation.
Behind the Scenes
My Computer Broke Down
Let me give you a taste of the glamorous life of a Youtuber. So, I've been unhappy with how loud my computer's CPU cooler was running ever since I got it. The fan's so loud it gets picked up pretty strongly by my mic, which makes all kinds of shenanigans necessary to filter that extra noise out of my voiceover, and even when I do, it doesn't come out great. So, right after releasing the new video, I thought to myself: "Now's the time to fix that. You've got a much quieter older cooler lying around somewhere. Just swap 'em and you're golden." Well, I was very much not golden. What I failed to remember, is why I had that crumby standard-issue CPU cooler on there in the first place: The old one didn't fit. I found that out when I first upgraded my system and tried to attach it, and I found that out for a second time when I tried to do the same thing again a few days ago. And you can't run a PC without the CPU being cooled, so that basically meant I was left stranded, computerless for a good two days until I got a new cooler that actually fit on the motherboard socket and everything was well once again. My PC's runninng significantly quieter now, which is nice, but it didn't have to go this chaotically.
All that is to say: Kids, don't be like me. Check your PC's socket type before you start ripping out parts.

Qomments and Cuestions
US Flag Burning
"isn't that still arson, and destruction of government property? or is it his flag?"
Since that wasn't the main focus of the video, but I still felt like I needed to address it, I tried to make the facts of the case clear in a precise little sentence, but it bears expanding on it here. The flag was, in fact, stolen from a nearby bank's flag staff - not by Johnson, but someone else.
So, yes, a crime had actually been committed by theft of the flag alone, but that was not the crime the police was going after, and not the crime Johnson was charged with; which made sense, since he wasn't the one stealing it. But neither did he burn it, though. At least, there's no proof that he did, and the testimony brought against him was shaky at best. He was convicted anyway.
The police and prosection went after a guy who seemingly didn't do anything illegal at all instead of focussing on the people who, quite clearly, did to some criming by vandalizing, stealing, and destroying property. In the shadow of a flag being burned, those run-of-the-mill crimes maybe just didn't look all that important.

Interesting Stuff
Book: Everything is Tuberculosis
I've been watching Vlogbrothers religiously for as long as I've been on Youtube, pretty much, which is, mathematically speaking, a long-ass time. It's one of the best channels on the platform and everyone should watch it, but that's not what this is about. One of the brothers, John, has recently released a new book and I've read it and it's really good.
It's about tuberculosis, a disease you most likely haven't given a thought to pretty much ever, but which has been the most deadly infectious disease in human history for virtually all of human history. And what's majorly fucked up about it: We've been able to cure it for many a decade, we just choose not to, because there's little monetary profit in it. John makes a great case for why we should care about tuberculosis, where we've gone wrong in the past, and what we can do to finally fix this situation and save millions upon millions of lives.
