October Photo #1: Diaper Change, Step One

When changing your toddler, the first step (even before removing his soiled diaper) should always be to lift his legs so that you can give his rear a thorough inspection. Were ther any leaks? Did the diaper adequately contain his mess? Is the poopy concentrated in the seat of the diaper, or did it spread around toward the front and/or back? Not only will answering these types of questions give you an indication of what you're in store for during the upcoming diaper change, it will also inform your technique for future diaper checks and changes. As an added bonus, your little one is sure to be reminded of his baby status and dependence on his diapers as you poke and prod his mushy bottom.

Remember: always make sure your toddler has his pacifier and a stuffed animal to accompany him during his diaper change. This is especially recommended during the inspection step, as he will likely make a fuss if not properly distracted.
