The female nude.

The female nude has distinct origins from the male. While the former originates in the perfect human athlete, the latter embodies the divinity of procreation. Nude female figures are shown in very early prehistoric art, and in historical times, similar images depict fertility deities such as the Near Eastern Ishtar. The Greek goddess Aphrodite belongs to this family and was also imagined as a life-giver, proud, and seductive. For many centuries, the Greeks preferred to see her clothed, unlike her Near Eastern counterparts, but in the mid-4th century BC, the sculptor Praxiteles made a nude Aphrodite, called the Cnidian, which established a new tradition for the female nude. Lacking the bulbous and exaggerated forms of Near Eastern fertility figures, Aphrodite, like Greek male athletic statues, had idealized proportions based on mathematical ratios. Moreover, her pose, with her head turned to one side and one hand covering her body, seemed to present the goddess surprised in her bath and, therefore, filled the nude with narrative possibilities.

El desnudo femenino tiene orígenes distintos al masculino. Mientras que el primero tiene su origen en el atleta humano perfecto, el segundo encarna la divinidad de la procreación. En el arte prehistórico muy temprano se muestran figuras femeninas desnudas y, en tiempos históricos, imágenes similares representan a deidades de la fertilidad como la Ishtar del Cercano Oriente. La diosa griega Afrodita pertenece a esta familia y también se la imaginaba como dadora de vida, orgullosa y seductora. Durante muchos siglos, los griegos prefirieron verla vestida, a diferencia de sus homólogas del Cercano Oriente, pero a mediados del siglo IV a.
