DK NEWS Aftershow 1006 (Squid Game overrated? / Backdoor advertisement history)

Comments

So was I the only weirdo that kept trying to see what was painted on the walls in the dorm throughout the episode? I was so ticked once I realized the hint to the games was on the walls the entire time. Loved Squid Games! There were small things throughout that made a difference. Picked up on the difference between the North and South Korean accent when Jung Ho-yeon’s character was speaking with her brother versus others; that was sad and actually got me. I couldn’t understand why there was only one old guy out of 456 people and thought the organizer was a sick person for treating the old guy like that. Then thought maybe they had to have him to teach the others how to play the games. Boy was I way off! Lastly watching Park Hae-Soo play a jerk after Prison Playbook was fun! Great show!

I'm just glad Yang Pang and Tzuyang returned from their cancelled hiatus.

I didn't know the cancel culture in Korea was so strong, I can't believe so many YouTubers were canceled after not disclosing some of their endorsements. If this happened in the US there would no longer be YouTubers or influencers, which might not be a bad idea, jk! I agree that it should be disclosed if you are recommending the item and are being paid by the brand. I once bought an item that was recommended by an influencer, didn't mention it was advertised and it turned out to be absolute shit, I just lost my trust in that person. In terms of JK, he never even mentioned the brand, it was just a picture that he posted of himself. I think people are just going after him because of who he is, there will always be haters who are trying to take people down.

I loved Squid Games, I would agree that it's in my top 3 Kdramas as well. The quality of this show and Kingdom are on another level. I'm surprised you guys caught the plot twist so quickly. I didn't and people I've talked to about the show didn't as well, so I don't think it's as predictable as you guys mentioned. The cinematography, the visuals, the acting were all superb (except the VIP's of course). I hope they get nominated for an Emmy next year. I'm glad Korean dramas are getting the recognition they deserve.

It’s okay,a little overrated

Hmmmm I think with jk it only got attention because it's his brothers and he was on the board... We never know what the intent was etc but I think from now on celebs need to state that it's advertisement if they are involved somehow with the company even if they weren't.... But would it be the same if he wore it to the airport and paparazzi caught him wearing it? Or is it more the fact that he took a selfie wearing it?

I enjoyed squid games because well I watched it with David and Danny hahaha I usually hate series like this so I pretty much didn't expect anything hahahaha

Char

The Veil is so good!!

Watched a bit of Squid Games found the gambler guy irritating and stopped adn watched The Veil but might go back to watching it.

Regards to All

I don't think JK's issue should be considered as back door endorsement. He did not explicitly mention the brand or reviewed it. He was just wearing the shirt and armys bought it. Same with kombucha, a fan just asked and he answered. He didnt even mention the brand (i think) during the live. That's just the power of BTS, anything they wear or use gets attention. It can't be avoided. But kudos to him for stepping down, tho unnecessary and unfair, he still wanted to keep the business from being dragged because of this controversy

I disagree with David on backdoor advertising. I feel like it’s quite manipulative if celebrities don't state that they're being paid to promote a product, especially if they're just stating that they're reviewing something. People would think it’s an honest opinion and believe it. Similar to what you said last time (Jungkook’s kombucha incident), people trust celebrities use of products because they are more likely to know what products are effective, from their managers, as their sole purpose is to look and feel their best as the celebrity themselves are the main end product. This sways people’s thinking towards certain products over others. I feel like it’s also very devious especially because idols have young viewers who look up to them and are less likely to be aware of the advertising traps they may fall prey to. However, I think Jungkook's case is different to previous ones mentioned because he didn't state the name of the product and was just seen wearing it. You said that its part of the business. I don’t agree that celebrities can’t profit off products using their name, as can be seen in so many celebrities advertising so many brands and products. But it starts becoming shady when they don’t state that they are advertising the product and are profiting off it. As a result, we have no qualms about you wearing Nakd Seoul as we know that you are selling it on your website. When reviewing products when backwards advertising, I feel like you're less likely to complain about the product or give any honest negative opinions.

There were definitely translation issues! In my livestream watch, our host (he speaks Korean/English) noted a few times the words were "stronger" than what was translated in English - in other words, there wasn't a viable English word to show in the translation, so they went with what was close enough. To me, some words can be conveyed much clearer in another language but than English can be that language, too. It's all in context.

Squid Games: Episode 1, speculated who was behind it all (guessed correctly) and Episode 5, figured out who the brother was. The phone thing was sloppy - why clean up the records room and leave the phone hook down incorrectly? And the VIPs were completely miscast, random non-Koreans off the street in Seoul. There were some elements of taking from "this" movie or "that" movie but you know what? I really enjoyed it and can't wait for season 2. BTW have you gone to the Squid Game pop-ups in any your areas in Seoul? What do they look like and what can you do?

kolea626

i think the issue people have with backdoor advertisements is the 'sneaky' of nature of them. For me, I don't think it is worth getting punished over but I think if you're trying to promote an item or service, you should be upfront about it! For example, with NAKD Seoul, the appeal of it to me is when you guys explained the process of getting the photos used and talking about the coasters! The genuine enthusiasm and dedication makes me interested in purchasing; when someone happily shares a product, I too feel the joy! If someone lies about a product endorsement I tend to associate that with the product instead of the benefits of it, it feels like they don't really think it is good or they don't want people to get to know the company/product in depth enough to form a connection with it!

So, JK gave money to the company and should then never show support for the company he has money in?? If there is payment for wearing the shirt . . . ah, he is paying himself with what could be his own money!

Maybe squid games overhyped, but i hope because of that hype, it would be a good introduction for many new people to see other great Asian thriller movies/series.

Squid Games: Do you guys think there are translation issues? I was not sure the writing for the english voice actors was legit! Wish I could understand Korean because I don't trust the dubs & subtitles . . . . Seems like this (translation errors) is a short coming when entering foreign entertainment. I really wish I could learn Korean (or any other language than english) so could expand my entertainment experiences!

The whole Jungkook issue is very interesting. I honestly don't see anything wrong with him wearing his brother's clothes. He has to wear something. And let's face it the whole controversary just shed more light on his brother's company. I didn't know he had a company. But when I heard of course I did google it to see. Who ever reported it, hope he knows it just backfired. Almost everything is sold out. And Jungkook didn't have to say a word.

I lost interest in the first few episodes but am still thinking to watch it all… to join in on/ understand the hype. plus some of my friends here who aren’t into Kpop or kdramas have watched it - so if I watch it will be nice to have something to bond over haha 💜 won’t make it to the aftershow as I will be working 😞

Jeika

I was not able to get past the first episode on Squid Games, just because I'm not a fan of the genre. To violent for me. As for the Jungkook situation, I'm torn. I think that everyone knows that if BTS does anything ARMY will notice the smallest details and track them down. I think Jungkook knew exactly what he was doing when he wore the shirt. I also don't think that there is anything wrong with what he did. I just see it as a benefit of being a BTS member. If I were in that position, I would do it in a heartbeat and not think twice about it. I really don't see the big deal.

Sayonda

There are 2 flaws in the logic, for me. 1. Jungkook did nothing to actually promote the brand. Fans searching for and blindly selling out any product they can identify related to a Celeb (clothes, shoes, socks, toothbrushes, fabric softeners, accessories, chapstick) is a "normal" practice and not the fault of the Celeb. And, 2. Let's be honest, Jungkook wearing a shirt sold out only that one shirt. If he wanted to, he could have mentioned his and his brothers connection to the brand and sold out every item forever. So yeah. I'm not buying it, and I'm not buying the initial complaint came from innocent motives.

Hana Park

i see nothing wrong with celebrities using backdoor advertising, as long as they don't promote the item or mention the brand!

kewan

Squid Game haven't watched (yet) so I dnt have a comment. In terms of Jungkook's alleged backdoor advertisement🤭It's kind of funny. JK doesn't care what brand of clothes he's wearing as long he is comfortable. He wasn't advertising the brand of clothes in question just simply wearing them. There are people who are just happy of finding faults to people.

May N.

I understand people getting upset about sneaky backdoor advertisements, but JK's case seemed shaky from the get-go as he never mentioned it. It is going to get to a point where we are scrutinizing every celebrity's outfits + every little brand affiliation and most people just don't care that much... that level of close examination isn't sustainable

Squid game was good. Deserves the hype because it was made well. Saw other recent action/horror series that were also famous but didn't get my full attention, I didn't even get to finish because the side-stories were just too distracting. Squid game's story is good for a mini series, it kept viewer's interest to keep watching. No fake looking CGI, unnecessary plot twists/side stories and not too much drama. The series was easy(?) on the eyes and was not boring.

jayzah one

Squid Game is overrated (it's like a simpler Alice in Borderland), but I still found it to be a good watch. Though it seems like the only K-Drama with breakout potential have elements of horror and/or violence, like Sweet Home. Hopefully other genres can get more attention in the future. As for the JK situation, what is he supposed to wear, a potato sack? Though those would probably sell out too!
