How Accurate Is A Bump Centering Tool?

The latest clockmaking episode (Making The Pendulum) will be ready very soon folks - Its turned into another long one (15 mins+), so I'm spending a few more days to complete the edit. In the meantime, here's a quick clip from what's coming up.

Cheers,

Chris.

How Accurate Is A Bump Centering Tool?

Hey Scott, will definitely do that in the future, thanks for being patient! I'm currently still running on one camera, although I have been considering getting a second camera for some time. I recently had a glitch on the camera where it wouldn't power up properly - the whole day came to a screeching halt, reminding me that I am a bit vulnerable in this area! Cheers mate :)

Chris, I know I've mentioned this before, and I don't wanna be _that guy_, but I'd love to see a video on your production methods. Your video and audio are of the highest quality.

Cool. Thanks. Incredible work as always.

20 meters! You should have enough to keep you going for a while then!

Its such a clever idea isn't it! I learned about it from Frank Ford. Be sure to check out Frank's website. An absolute treasure chest of project ideas, techniques, tips - http://www.frets.com/HomeShopTech/hstpages.html For a luthier, he's a heck of a machinist!

Yes, shims on the jaws. I use this plumbers flashing from my local hardware store. There is a bit more detail on putting them in place in the full length vid - http://www.bunnings.com.au/consolidated-alloys-300-x-0-7mm-x-20m-weatherflash_p1100465 Cheers guys :)

Very gently - the workpiece is being pushed into a new position in the chuck jaws, so I tend to take it nice and slow to avoid any nasty surprises! Cheers Matt :)

Yepper...<5tenths! Need to check mine now. Thanks Chris!

Love it Chris, nothing like a quicky

Nelson Collar

Looks like you are right, Jess. I missed that the first three times I looked at the video. Chris's shop is always so much cleaner and neater than any other machining videos on Youtube.

Charlie Robinson

Looks pretty accurate Chris :)

Jess Neal

I'm pretty sure those are just aluminum shims in between the work piece and the jaws.

Chris ... I love the changes that you appear to have made to your lathe. Looks like the jaws of that chuck have been polished and 'melted'? to some extent. I am always amazed at the neatness and cleanliness of your work area, but this rises to new heights.

Charlie Robinson

being a complete and utter novice, these kind of things help *loads*. I used the bump centering trick recently on an awkward part, although my 'tool' was quite a bit more ghetto than this ;-) might be a nice thing to make for myself though, I have a bunch of bearings kicking around. Thanks Chris!

Gareth Crispin

Like the demo.

Samuel Irons

Never seen soft jaws on a lathe before. Looking forward to the full video :)

Scarlet565

Nice quick one today - can't wait for the pendulum. Awesome editing on this as per usual Chris!

Bart Jennings

How hard do you feed in with the bearing for centering? I have never done this before, looks intereting.
