Single point threading a set of timber screws for the clock base

These were an interesting little part to make - 8 are required to fasten the feet from the previous post to the timber plinth. The thread form is a 60 degree degree included angle, with a much larger than usual flat at the base of the thread. Tailstock support is from a simple cone runner turned up for the job.

Cheers,

Chris.

What a great tease! It just makes me that much more anxious for the videos to come.

Scott Clausen

I was actually looking at a wood screw the other day thinking, "How would I cut one of those via the single point method?" An elegant solution as always, thank you Chris!

Every time I see you use a female center, I think to myself that is a nifty trick.

Right on mate :) Sometimes when I look back over a few weeks of footage while I'm editing, I think I'm rather shooting myself in the foot for putting it all in the one video. I could easily break most videos up into 3 minute "per part" episodes, but I figure it just looks better for the viewer to see some decent progress with each video, rather than for example 4 shorter videos = fasteners/feet/plinth/legs and force them through 4x the advertising. It kills my adrev income, but overall I think its a more satisfying experience for the viewer, which is the most important thing. Having said that, these little clips have been a great opportunity on Instagram and FB to spark off little conversations on the details, so I figured that could work here too. Essentially I decided to provide the IG/FB content a few weeks in advance on Patreon first. I completely understand the criticism that its a bit spammy, and whilst 15 second posts fit the IG and FB platforms, it is a bit brief for this platform and may simply be unsuitable - I'm listening out for the brickbats, if the concensus is that it doesn't work, I'll pull the pin on it and go back to just the full length releases as per usual. All considered though, I really would like to squeeze a bit more "value" out of each of these videos, particularly for Patrons. And I like the idea of this place being a bit more conversational and more patron to patron. I'm not entirely sure on what that would look like, but no doubt it will all unfold as it should :)

As usual your tool grinding is superb Chris. I agree with Colin and Cmdr (a bit), but your point of community is what interests me over all, for any format. Sharing our experience, knowledge and wherewithal freely in a caring environment is something I cherish, as I'm not a spring chicken anymore. I've been around a few blocks...but mainly I love to learn and share something every day! I've quit watching the Um, er, & uh crowd for quite a while now and that community is definitely not to my liking. I value my time more than sitting through 30-50min for maybe 8min of content and the rest of; bad - lighting, shot angles, un-thought out content/dialog, and "look what I got from my fans", plus all of the buy my bling, is just more than a person should have to put up with...might as well watch the box. More importantly I know what you go through to make your fine videos and presentation, whether they are 15sec or 20min. My guess is that these 15 sec tidbits are at least an hour or so, even though they can be used as part of a larger future workflow it is a ton of work...especially adding my favorite Squeak/overlay. (Big Thanks!) As you say, you have to gloss over some of the details sometimes to keep things manageable, but to those with discerning eyes and minds that is the perfect opportunity to ask and involve themselves in the "Community". I am most grateful you always answer my questions and at least acknowledge my comments, even when I blither. Please keep with Your plan, Chris, evolve it as you wish...It's absolutely wonderful and is my pleasure for sure! Thanks, ~PJ

Awesome, now truly everyone is happy :D Keep going, you're great!

CommanderTomalak

Great to hear that Colin, that's pretty much how I hoped the quick clips will be received - just a quick heads up of what's going on, and a chance to maybe provoke a bit of conversation and discussion. I know I gloss over a lot of details in the main videos, and sometimes I think there's so much more to squeeze out of them. You're spot on with the club meeting thing too - I definitely want that to develop here if possible. Not just my stuff either, but everyone who feels like showing off what they did in the shop this week. Would be a shame to have a bunch of like minded home engineers in the one spot, and not get everyone talking with each other a bit more freely :)

Great suggestion Cmdr, will adopt the "Teaser" prefix, that will communicate it clearly to all. I'm essentially giving you the Instagram/FB feed 2 weeks in advance of everyone else as a bonus, but understand completely if it is not your thing. Cheers mate :)

Oh man I really wish I'd thought of that John, would have been perfect! Next time!

If you offset your tailstock you could make it a tapered thread!

John Creasey

Hi Chris, I like the trailer videos and look forward to the full video in due course. It's nice to know that you are active in the workshop and getting on with the clock. The trailers are like meeting up with fellow club members each week and telling them what's been going on. Just touching base every now and then. So I must respectfully put an opposing view to CommanderTomalak

Colin Glanville

Chris, I have a great idea. You could label these teaser videos in the title (such as "[teaser] Single point...") then everyone who's not interested in these 15s shorts like me won't need to log into Patreon to check if the video is actually worth watching and may just ignore the notification. I understand that you're trying to do something special to us and I really appreciate, but I think these short updates are mere spam, at least to me. I personally support you because I love the quality of your videos, your dedication and the fine work you're showing to us - not because I expect regular bonus videos in return. I'm actually happy to wait for the full video because I know anyway, that it'll be worth watching. Its obvious that you can't spend weeks of work on a regular basis just for the bonus projects, because that'll make your public channel less interesting (which neither of us wants). So I'd be totally fine with a bonus video every few months, that is actually worth watching. Then I'd actually be excited to click the link. Instead I'm now like "Do I really want to take the time logging into Patreon if this is a 15s teaser again?" Don't try too hard to be nice to us, we love you anyway :)

CommanderTomalak

Nice can't wait

Chris... you're such a tease.

Doug

Hey Al, that's a great idea - will turn an extra up as a pilot. I would be devastated if I was to snap one off in this lovely piece of timber, thanks for the warning :)

These short updates are interesting and tantalizing! You don't think of making wood screws but it makes sense. Are you going to make one out of steel as a starter for the brass ones? I use steel screws when I'm using delicate brass screws in hardwood. I can tell you from experience, breaking a brass screw off in an almost finished project is a heart breaker.

Al McKague

Awesome mate, so pleased!
