Quigley never wanted to be a father, and resents Vienne for - he feels - forcing it on him. Uaid was nothing but another son writ even larger. A bigger burden, a bigger loss of control, a bigger theft of his time and his future. He hated Uaid and he hated Matty. His current feelings towards both are ambivalent.
I went back and forth on this page. The seventh panel was originally much more explicit--

I ultimately decided I wanted it ambiguous. Take what you will from Uaid's look of disapproval. He was there. He was awake. He knows what went down from that night forward.
