I like that Toma admits he wilfully and deliberately stayed away, and doesn't try to make an excuse. He really did put his own discomfort with his marriage ahead of his responsibility to be there for his daughter. Does he deserve to be kept away from her afterwards? Absolutely not, but he'd accepted the consequence as inevitable, and it sapped the life right out of him the moment that letter came.
If he can turn this around though... if he can be the hero Elka thinks he can be...
